NIST’s Counselling Coordinator Julia Simens launched her book on Friday 27 May amongst a group of NIST parents, Bangkok community members and NIST staff. The book, Emotional Resilience and the Expat Child, contains practical tips and storytelling that will strengthen the global family. Julia illustrates the power of the universal language of emotions in her story of expat children and events. Friday’s book launch provided the opportunity to hear from the author herself, on her motivation to write the book and on her experiences in doing so. Guests were given insight into the reactions of her children, as noted by Julia “My daughter Jackie is 19 and my son Grant is 17. This is one reason why the stories are about a boy called Jack- then either of my children can deny that I am talking about one of them and they can blame the story on their sibling.” Julia kindly read a passage from the book and signed copies for those who attended. The strategies and practical tips throughout the book provide expat parents with a unique opportunity to really engage and work with their children to ensure they are not left out of the equation as they are moved around the world. As articulated by Julia, “Sometimes an event that seems totally trivial to you remains imprinted in the mind of your child.” The book has been received positively and is already being sold across five different continents, a recommended read for all expat families.
