On Friday 18 March, the NIST community organised a donation drive to support the Japanese tsunami and earthquake relief fund. Students, parents and staff, all dressed in red and white, came together to respond and contribute to the cause. Students collected money, made paper cranes and expressed their good wishes for the people of Japan. The parent community united to bake food of all varieties and worked all day selling their products. The Japanese parents helped show students how to make cranes in morning homerooms, sold food alongside the other parents, and spent all afternoon stringing cranes to be hung at the School’s entrance. “Our community has moved beyond the simple concept of raising money to a more deeper need to act on behalf of people in trouble. It is this desire from within the community that is important as it reflects a need to express concern and caring and to take action as we stress in our IB curriculums. The rest is history”, said Mr. Adrian Watts, the School’s Deputy Head and Academic Director. All the proceeds, which totalled over THB 770,000, will be donated to the Japanese Red Cross Society and the nearly 5,000 origami cranes are now on display at the School’s entrance. “The NIST Japanese Group would like to express our deep appreciation for the response of the community to the recent disasters in Japan. We are overwhelmed by your heartfelt generosity and the student spirit in making so many cranes. We feel we are very lucky to be a part of this community”, said Chie Curotta, the NIST Japanese Community representative.
