7 Elements of Music 7 Elements of Music  The 7 Elements of Music Concerts were a celebration of general music classes over 3 nights in March. Over 550 students performed musical items to a combined audience of over 850 people. Both Elementary nights were “sell outs” and featured mass items with all of year 4 and 5 performing on stage at the same time. It was a great experience for the 350 elementary students to experience performing over two nights, just like a professional show. The Secondary concert was also well attended and featured a wide variety of items which kept the audience engaged to the end.

The central concept of the concerts was the 7 elements of music. Form, Rhythm, Dynamics, Timbre, Texture, Harmony and Melody were all portrayed through a variety of musical disciplines over the three nights. A feature of the concerts were the animations which linked the items, and of course the giant 7. The Music Department would like to thank everyone who helped out, and look forward to performing again next year.

Annual Giving Appeal Launched Annual Giving Appeal Launched  On Tuesday evening of this week, NIST launched its Annual Giving Fund with a cocktail party for the school’s major donors.  Guests did not recognize the lower cafeteria as it was transformed into the “Breezeway,” complete with fairy lights and exquisite food.  The purpose of the evening was to thank our donors for their generous financial support to date, while also encouraging more support and passing on that message to others in our community.  NIST welcomes all parents, in fact encourages them to join in this, our latest endeavor to provide even more opportunities to our children.

During the evening, Simon Leslie welcomed guests and introduced the new fund.  The Annual Giving Fund allows parents to take an active role in their children’s education.  Tuition fees provide an enormous amount –they allow NIST to seek the best teachers from around the globe; they allow NIST to provide the best curriculum available; and they allow NIST to provide the resources necessary to support that curriculum.  And as you have seen in recent years, NIST is constantly improving the learning environment with new buildings and refurbishment programmes.

However, school fees only go so far.  Like any great institution of learning, we can always do more.  As Mr. Leslie said, “We have dreams about quality and of better provisions for our students.” He gave some examples from the school’s “wish list” which was put together by teachers and administrators.  These examples included shade covering at sporting events, flood lights for the pitch, more trees and landscaping, more play areas for our children, and other, smaller items.

Last week brochures were sent to our parent community explaining how the Annual Giving Fund works.  NIST is asking people to make donations to the school – every little bit helps.   Donors can even pick the areas where they want their gifts to go, whether to the Creative Arts, Sports, Science, or the Endowment fund.  As you donate, you also join circles of recognition which will appear on the website and in an annual giving report.  The gifts are accumulative, so smaller gifts continue to build over time, so donors join new, higher circles.  Please go to the school website, Annual Giving Fund, for more information or contact the Office of Development.

Bridges: Oliver Stone Bridges: Oliver Stone  Students from the New International School of Thailand (NIST) heard an extraordinary talk from and then dialogued with Academy Award Winner Oliver Stone. Mr. Stone’s visit to NIST was part of the third ASEAN event series "Bridges - Dialogues towards a Culture of Peace.”

At NIST, Mr. Stone gave a keynote speech on “film-making and peace-building” in which he suggested “kindness” as a key ingredient for a peaceful society. The foundation of kindness should be nurtured through schooling and education. Therefore, a school must not only teach students to be knowledgeable but it should teach them to be kind. For Mr. Stone, knowledge is gained and comes in forms of collective experiences which he described as the “Theory of Living”.

International Day 2009 International Day 2009  NIST celebrated its annual International Day festival on Saturday, February 21, 2009. The day began with a country parade starting in the Montri Bus parking lot and ending on the stage in the Main Field. The countries were lined up alphabetically behind Thailand.

There was plenty of variety of entertainment, food and stalls and the country booths were wonderful.

Country Booths was created in the MPH. Lots of guests and children visited the various countries that make up our community, learned a bit about the culture, played games or sampled some food and got their passports stamped.  Outside, there were booths in the oval area and the main field.

There was something for everyone.  As Simon Leslie, NIST’s Headmaster said, “International Day is a wonderful opportunity to stand up and be proud of where we originate from and to present a little of our own culture to the rest of the NIST world while also celebrating the spirit of NIST.”

MODEL UNITED NATIONS FINISHES ON A HIGH MODEL UNITED NATIONS FINISHES ON A HIGH  On Saturday the NIST MUN club attended the 13th Bangkok MUN Conference hosted by RIS. This event marks the end of the MUN calendar for the club and it was the third conference that the school has participated in this year. Since meeting for the first time in mid August over 100 students have participated in the club over the three seasons and in terms of numbers, the quality of debate and the student leadership displayed, this was the best year in the history of the club.

In October the school hosted the largest MUN Conference ever held in Bangkok and in November we sent a strong team of 10 students to Taipei for the annual IASIS conference where only the leading international schools in Asia are represented.

At RIS we had a delegation of 42 students and it was a very professional and well prepared groups. Special recognition goes to four of students who took on the role of Chairs, these were Aim, Joey, Steffi and Sagnik. In addition, NIST had the largest number of Resolutions debated and a number of these were passed by their respective committees.

So overall, in terms of the quality of our delegates, the quality and quantity of their debate and resolutions and the number and performance of our Chairs this really was an excellent indicator of the strength of the MUN programme at NIST and a great way to end our calendar.

Well done, and thanks to all those who represented the school so professionally over the course of this year.

PYP Exhibition 2006-07, May 7-10 PYP Exhibition 2006-07, May 7-10  Students chose a central idea from the Organizing theme, “Sharing the Planet” for this year’s exhibition which culminated this week with the students presenting their findings over two and a half days to members of the NIST community. Groups shared how they had taken action to protect the environment, and encouraged visitors to do likewise. For example Pim, Pam and Jean from 6JS presented Khun Meechai with funds they had raised.

The Year 6 Exhibition is a culmination of the Primary Years Programme. It is a requirement in PYP schools that Year 6 students undertake an in-depth collaborative inquiry to synthesize the primary years learning and to share the learning with the community in the form of an Exhibition.

The Exhibition which spans over ten weeks demonstrates the student’s ability to be independent and responsible learners and provides an authentic assessment of their learning.

Ski Trip Ski Trip  Wednesday, 13th December - Weather: Sunny clear sky, warm afternoon
Temperature 0-4 degrees C

As we arrived into the LAST DAY in white Verbier, Switzerland. Everyone was sad and disappointed. We had an unforgettable ski race on top of the mountain in the morning, to show off our skills that we had learned in the past week, everyone got to utilize their capability and intelligence to the fullest in skiing/ snowboarding. This has been an awesome week!!!

Monday 11th December
Temperature: Verbier: 0º  - -3º Medran: -8º
It is the fourth day here at Les Elfes. Whether it be skiing or snowboarding; everybody here has improved tremendously. Today was particularly exciting because most of the beginners went to the bigger slopes (rather than the short beginner semi-slope). On this day, the advanced snowboarders were told to forget the complex extension and flexion turns and were taught how to do a 180º  jump: both backside and frontside. To add to that, the skiers were taught how to complete a parallel turn. Overall, everyone has had an exciting day, regardless of the muscles pains in unusual places.

Sunday 10th December
Weather: Sunny/ Partly Cloudy - Outside Temperature: Somewhere around 0
Today was another day of skiing/snowboarding, a lot of the people fell, but it was worth it. Everyone has improved since the first day, skiing beginners has learned how to make turns, stop without falling, although the snow didn’t fall today,  it was just another gorgeous day up in the mountain.
By Charles

Saturday December 9th.
Under slightly overcast skies, and a gusting wind, the ski and snowboard lessons started today. For those who have skied or snowboarded before, it took only a couple of runs for the memory to get the legs working again - and reactivate the forgotten ski muscles. For those new to the sport, the effort required to get the strange attachments to their feet to move in the direction required was exhausting but well rewarded with impressive progress as the day wore on. There are some very leg-weary kids (and teachers) this evening. Snow started falling in the afternoon and we're hoping for a good dump this evening to add to the slopes.

Friday 8th December
We've got snow!!! Arrived to a white Verbier, following a good snowfall last night. Snowball fights this morning and a fledgling snowman created. We're all kitted out with skis and snowboards and looking forward to heading up to the slopes tomorrow.

UNIS Steppers Rock NIST UNIS Steppers Rock NIST  On Friday 23rd May a group of Students from the “United Nations International School of Hanoi” visited NIST to perform and take workshops on STEPPING. “Stepping” is a syncopated and synchronized dance form which gained popularity amongst black fraternities in the US in the 1980’s.  It involves stamping, clapping, slapping and various other body percussions and is a powerful and aggressive form of group movement.  It has been popularized in movies such as “Stomp the Yard,” Performances were made to over 1000 students on the day, and over 100 year 8,9 and 10 students took part in Workshops. NIST would love to start a group next year, with perhaps a return trip to UNIS.

Year 11 Work Experience - June 2008 Year 11 Work Experience - June 2008  What a fantastic week our Year 11 students had June2-6, exploring the World of Work. In our culminating activity for their Careers unit, the Year 11’s ventured out to almost 50 job placements in and around Bangkok. A special thanks to our community in offering these wonderful opportunities for our students. This is arguably one of the most memorable high school experiences for the students and we could not do it without the generosity and support from our vast community.  Here are a few photos of our students in action...  41   2 years ago
Year 12 - Prachinburi Year 12 - Prachinburi  On the last two school days of 2006, 42 Year 12 students and 4 chaperones went on the first ever voluntary CAS field trip. After having finished their trial exams, many of them felt that the physical labor was a pleasant change to the academic demands of the previous days. The school we visited is located in Prachinburi, a mere two hours trip from Bangkok. We left the school at 7.30 and arrived at 10.30 to immediately start the work on the improvement of the school’s facilities. The work included building walls, removing large quantities of earth and replacing it with tons of concrete, and the preparation of food for the 46 souls that needed to be fed. The Year 12 students worked really hard to get the work done before our return to NIST on late Saturday afternoon. A soccer and volleyball match on Friday afternoon, followed by a party organized by the parents of the school gave the students a chance to relax from the strenuous work performed during the day. As the administration of the school was very pleased with the work done, the students ought to be congratulated on their accomplishments and cooperative approach throughout the three days of community and service work. Well done!  102   4 years ago

Year 4 Take Action Year 4 Take Action  On our unit Survivor all year 4s raised money for a hill tribe school. The school was building a library at Baan Khun Wong in Mae Hong Son Province. We sold Mama Noodles, snow cones and jelly. We all raised 33,743 baht! Every body had fun. We gave the money to THEP (Thailand Hill tribe Education Project). Some people ate so much-we thanked them. Every student had a job to help the sales like putting ice in the bowls and putting hot water in the bowl with mama noodles. By James

I really feel proud of myself because I think I have done a great job by selling snow cones to people to raise money for the Hilltribes. It was very good fun to do this activity because it gave me lots of information and it was very interesting. We raised about 33,743 baht for the Hilltribes school library in Mae Hong Son Provence. I also thank Mrs Siew for doing a great job by preparing the things and helping us sell snow cones. The things we sold were Snow cones, Mama noodles and Jelly.  By Annamalai

We were selling snow cones to raise money for the Hill tribe. They need money because they don’t have windows and doors for their school. We weren’t just selling snow cones; we sold mama noodles and jelly too. We had different roles. It was a fun job but I got stung by a bee. We got 33,743 baht. They need only 30,000 baht for the windows. The 3,743 baht they will use to buy books and other things for their school. Their school is at Mae Hong Son. The school is called Baan Khun Wong. By: JR

4CB, 4MM, 4BM and 4IH were raising money for the hill tribes. The money goes to the school to pay for the windows. All the year 4 classes made 33743 baht all together. We sold mama noodles, jelly and snow cones. We had different roles. Like making snow cones or getting the money and getting ice. By Louis

They also went to a cave called Phratat where they learnt about bats, stalactites and stalagmites. At night after dinner Year 6 had some night activities like the Fashion Show, where they made a costume out of newspaper and tape.
Another night they had the Year Six Idol performances. The next night they had a disco where everyone could dance their hearts out. Overall they had a great time and would really like to go there again.

Have a look at some of the photos.

Year 8 Year 8  The year 8 students are busily following the exciting programme developed by Mr Kennedy and Mr Tyro! The students have responded magnificently to the challenges laid down to them by their sailing, diving, outward bound and scientific instructors. The weather is ideal for the outdoor pursuits and the food is great. Oh, of 8D, said, "I think the sailing was great as it was my very first time and I did not think I could do it - but I did".
Ms Kelly has been impressed by the students, " This is the best organised trip I have ever been on and the range of activities is great. I am so pleased that I was selected to come on this trip."
