Thanks to a student’s initiative, NIST is making a commitment to go Carbon Free by joining Plant-A-Tree-Today’s Carbon Off-set programme. NIST will be the first school in Thailand, and perhaps Asia, to calculate its carbon emissions on a yearly basis, and then offset those emissions by buying and planting trees. In addition, NIST is taking steps to cut back on carbon emissions through more efficient air conditioning units, lights, and other energy conserving and recycling activities. We need to reduce first and offset second.

It was Y7 student Karuna Srikureja who came up with the idea of planting trees and approached the school administration. Karuna knows that trees play a crucial role in the environment and was hoping to promote a “greener” NIST. Trees absorb carbon dioxide, a key greenhouse gas, from the atmosphere thus helping to keep our environment clean and safe.

Having worked with the Plant-A-Tree-Today (PATT) Foundation previously on several occasions, including building a school nursery, field trips and other educational activities, NIST was aware of the Carbon Free programme that PATT offers. So taking Karuna’s idea one step further, NIST can actually help combat climate change, while also making our students, parents and school suppliers more aware of the role that they play as well.

NIST is hoping that our Parents will be motivated by our actions, and offset their own, personal carbon dioxide emissions. We all leave an imprint on our environment in terms of our energy consumption. Every light we use, car ride or airplane trip we take, adds to the carbon footprint we leave. The PATT Foundation was formed in 2005 with its mission to react to problems caused by massive and increasing levels of deforestation worldwide and global warning by raising awareness of environmental issues and the role forests play, taking action against climate change, educating children on these issues and to plant more trees.
