Shark guardian presentation well
received by NIST students
On Thursday 10 February 2011,
NIST welcomed Brendon Sing from Shark Guardian to
give a very educational, inspiring and informative
presentation to NIST Years 6-7 students. The
presentation covered various knowledgeable topics
about sharks including the image of sharks in the
media, as well as shark interaction, evolution,
biology and behaviour. The presentation also
addressed sharks in danger and conservation and
finally, how to support and learn more.
Brendon began his talk by giving a background on how
the media for the past 60 years has portrayed an
inaccurate image and associated sharks with the
element of fear. To dispute such claims, Brendon
presented factual information about shark behaviour
and used statistical information to show that sharks
are not dangerous creatures. In addition, he shared
with the students the great importance of sharks in
keeping our ecosystem balanced and healthy.
Brendon’s presentation, along with his multimedia
slideshow, captured the students’ attention and was
highly inspiring as students learned that through
education, dedication and the right motivation, they
can make a difference for the survival of shark
populations around the world. The presentation ended
with an informal dialogue session between Brendon
and NIST students.
