Early Songkran Celebration at NIST
On Tuesday 29 March, NIST
celebrated Songkran, the traditional Thai New Year.
Students, parents and staff gathered around the
outdoor Oval area to watch traditional Thai
performances on the stage, followed by a Thai
‘water-pouring’ ceremony.
Following the stage activities, eight talented Year
11 students taught event participants how to make
plaa ta phian (a fish mobile from palm leaves). In
addition, Thai parents and staff served a variety of
Thai snacks . A professional chef from Mae Pranom
chili paste brand, one of the main sponsors of the
event, showed NIST staff and students how to make
pad thai, the king of Thai noodle dishes. Everyone
had fun learning to make this popular dish and
sharing it with their friends.
Overall, participants enjoyed the event and
appreciated learning more about Thai culture and
food.
