NIST Students Take a Thoughtful Journey Through the Eyes of Steve McCurry

On Monday 28 February 2011, NIST welcomed Steve McCurry, an American photojournalist best known for his photograph “Afghan Girl,” which originally appeared in National Geographic magazine where he works as a regular contributor.

Mr. McCurry allowed the audience an insight into his colourful background and how he became interested in photojournalism whilst travelling as a teenager around the world. He shared his photo portfolio with the audience, narrating the photographs and allowing students to see the deeper meaning of each photo. Mr. McCurry took everyone on a photographic journey around the world, opening eyes to other cultures and ways of life. Each photograph spoke a thousand words. NIST’s Year 11 and Year 12 students were fortunate to be offered such a unique opportunity.

His presentation and interaction with the NIST students inspired each and every one of them to look through their own lens and to follow their passions. At the end of the presentation, the students were given the opportunity to ask Mr. McCurry questions about his work and inspiration, as well as his photographic techniques.
