Wai Kru At NIST
Wai Kru Ceremony is an annual Thai celebration where students pay respect to their teachers and demonstrate gratitude as they present flower arrangements each with a symbolic meaning. Wai Kru is held at the start of every school year, and is actively celebrated at NIST. It is always held on a Thursday at the beginning of the academic year as auspiciously Thursday is held as a special day for teachers.
The Ceremony began with the national anthem and Wai Kru chant by student representatives which expresses respect for and gratitude towards their teachers, and asks for their teachers’ blessing of their studies. This is then followed by students presenting the teachers with traditional flower arrangements, each intricate and unique in its design. Notably the Eggplant flower represents respect, the Bermuda grass signifies patience and perseverance and the Ixora flowers, signifies sharp wit.
Students from across the school participated in this important Thai tradition, many of whom may have experienced Wai Kru for their first time. It is always wonderful to see our diverse student body embracing new cultures and our Wai Kru ceremony beautifully demonstrates this.
