A Snapshot of NIST's History ...

Message from the United Nations, August, 1992

"The United Nations family of agencies in Thailand have committed their full support to the New International School of Thailand. It is an exciting new venture in international education of the highest quality. This is a truly international school - as distinct from a national expatriate school. What is taught, and the way in which it is taught, is designed to reflect the fundamental values of our global society. Through being United Nations related, the school is better able to project and maintain a consistent, uniform international perspective in all its teaching and activities."

Rafeeuddin Ahmed, Executive Secretary

Our History

1992 ..

BirdEyeView_oldThe New International School of Thailand opened to students in August of 1992. It was established by a group of individuals who felt that there was a need in Bangkok for a school having a truly internationally focused curriculum, not tied to a specific national system. A statement of principles and philosophy evolved which was closely related to the Charter of the United Nations. Another important purpose for the establishment of the school was to serve the large multi-national expatriate community. From the time the first classes were held in 1992, the student population has grown from approximately 500 to well over 1300, representing nearly 50 nations. Through a selective admissions process a balance of nationalities is maintained, in order to ensure the continuing international composition.

1993 ..

studentsThe school extended into its second phase of operation with the opening of the Year 10 in August. Students in Years 10 and 11 (grade 9 and 10) followed the International General Certificate of Secondary Education (IGCSE), a two-year course leading to examinations administered by Cambridge University. In 1999, the IGCSE course was phased out and a full International Baccalaureate Middle Years Programs was implemented.

1996 ..

frontThe NIST Graduation Diploma was launched to present to students who successfully complete the final years' programme. The year also marked the expansion of the school to Upper Secondary level and the introduction of the International Baccalaureate Diploma course.

1997 ..

The school envisaged the final developmental phase of the secondary school. The Secondary School celebrated its first five years with the Graduation of our inaugural Year 13 International Baccalaureate Diploma class of 1997. The class of 1997 was our first graduating group and consisted of 18 students.

1998 ..

mypThe school was authorized by the International Baccalaureate Programme to offer the IB Middle Years Programme.

The school was accredited by the European Council of International Education (ECIS) and the New England Association of Schools and Colleges (NEASC). NIPTA, the NIST Parents and Teachers Association, was formed and later granted a registration.

1999 ..

The school was authorized by the International Baccalaureate Organization to offer the Primary Years Programme (PYP)

The first NIST Alumni gathering was held at Laguna Fondue Restaurant on Sukhumvit Soi 15.

2000 ..

A 30-Year lease on the campus was agreed with the Church of Christ in Thailand. This allowed the school to put in place its rebuilding master plan.

Quilt - Students created the 88-block design by visually displaying their vision of a "better world". The range of artwork and ideas reflected the belief that by working together we can make a difference. Themes of acceptance, protection, love and peace were strongly illustrated to help us find ways in which we all can contribute to a better world, our mission.

2001 ..

NIST hosted a conference on International Education in Thailand to support Thai Universities who wished to offer advanced placement to students who had successfully completed the IB programme.

Year 13 gained a recreational room.

2002 ..

NIST responds to the Tsunami Appeal: The NIST Community pulled together to raise funds and provisions for some of the children who were affected. We also developed a special relationship with Baan Thap Lamu, school in Phang Nga Province, one of the worst Tsunami hit areas. The food and scholarship programmes will not only provide short term benefit and relief for these children, but also provide better opportunities for sustainable outcomes.

2005 ..

CABThe second story of the Early Years centre was opened to accommodate Year 1 classrooms.

The new Creative Arts Building and Charnvirakul Library was opened.

A Strategic Plan study was under taken to set out the school's strategic directions for the next five years, expressed through goals and targets, and key improvement strategies.

Pilot Tablet Program - a new exciting innovation was introduced to our academic program. A tablet computer was given to every student in year 10; this program enabled students to use the latest tablet technology throughout the school day, and at home, thus enhancing their learning opportunities at NIST.

2006 ..

The NIST Strategic Plan was approved by the Foundation for International Education (FIE). A new Mission Statement was developed to keep up with the challenges of knowledge-based economy as follows:

As a leading IB world school, NIST's mission is

to inspire and empower each student

to pursue individual excellence

and enrich the world.

NIST becomes a testing centre for SAT, standard achievement tests.

Stand UP Against Poverty- the Secondary School joined their voices to the millions of other people around the world asking governments to honor their Millennium Development Goal of bringing an end to poverty.

The NIST Annual Giving Fund is initiated to support school funding and to improve facilities and other areas of the school.

The tablet computer programme was extended to Years 11 and 12 and further extended in the elementary school.

2007 ..

The Class of 2007 graduates with 10 class members having studied at NIST for their entire educational lives, from early years to Y13, a total of 15 years.

The tablet computer programme is now extended to include year's 7-9 so that all secondary year levels have access to tablet technology.

The CAB building will be officially opened by HRH Princess Sirindhorn on January 10, 2008.
