School Profile

CEEB: 695270 UCAS: 48297

NIST - The New International School of Thailand is recognized as an IB World School by the International Baccalaureate Organization (IBO). It is authorized to offer the IB Primary Years Programme (PYP), the Middle Years Programme (MYP), and the IB Diploma Programme (DP). NIST was the first school in Thailand to have dual accreditation as awarded by the Council of International Schools (CIS) and the New England Association of Schools and Colleges (NEASC). The Ministry of Education in Thailand licenses the school and it is governed by a Council of Trustees known as the Foundation for International Education.

Mission Statement:

As a leading IB world school, NIST’s mission is
to inspire and empower each student
to pursue individual excellence
and enrich the world.

Student Body:

The school serves families from over 50 different countries. Most students are likely to enter higher education in North America, the UK, Asia, Australasia, and Europe. NIST has a total enrolment of just over 1,390 students spread evenly across Elementary and Secondary.

Teachers:

NIST teachers also come from a varied group of nationalities with over 25 countries represented in our teaching and support staff. NIST teachers are all fully qualified in teaching the IB curriculum and meet both the Ministry of Education requirements and NIST's own high standards.

ADD CHART HERE

School Calendar:

The school year begins in mid-August and ends in mid-June. It is divided into two semesters. There are at least 180 teaching days per year.

Curriculum:

NIST is an IB World School. NIST follows the IB Primary Years Programme (PYP), IB Middle Years Programme (MYP), and IB Diploma Programme (DYP). Incorporated into the curricula is an extensive World Language (presently 21 different languages) programme and an extensive co-curricular programme of creative, sporting, and community service activities. Life skills, Thai Studies and Global Issues courses are also taught throughout. Physical Education is taught throughout the school.

Graduation Requirements:

The IB Diploma Programme is the basis of study for the final two years. Both IB Certificate and IB Diploma students must take six subjects. One subject must be selected from each of the following groups as shown in the model below:

curric

Group 1 Language A (Best/First Language)
Group 2 Language B (Second Language)
Group 3 Individuals and Societies (History, Geography, Economics, Business & Management, Psychology)
Group 4 Experimental Sciences (Physics, Chemistry, Biology, Environmental Systems, Design Technology)
Group 5 Mathematics (Higher Level Mathematics, Further Maths, Standard Level Mathematics and Mathematical Studies)
Group 6 Electives (Visual Arts, Theatre Arts, Music, Computer Science or another subject from Groups 1-4)

Students also take the IB Theory of Knowledge course, and Diploma students write an Extended Essay. All students are involved in the CAS (Creativity, Action and Service) programme. It is worthy to note that our most recent graduating class included eighteen students (21%) with 38 points or better, eleven (13%) with 40 points or better and fifty four (64%) Bilingual Diploma Graduates (Two “A” Languages).

profileThe NIST Graduation Diploma is awarded to students who have successfully completed their four years of Upper Secondary School. Credit is given for transcribed achievement from NIST and other schools attended. Criteria for graduation are academic and extra-curricular, in keeping with NIST’s philosophy of holistic development. Having received CIS/NEASC accreditation, the NIST Graduation Diploma is valid as a High School Diploma in the U.S.A. and abroad.

Note: Equivalency with the US Grade system follows recommendations made by the IBO, based upon suggestions made by the Franco-American Commission, Paris, and the collective wisdom of a number of colleagues and schools with good experience of the systems. It is acknowledged that grading standards vary, and that admissions officers in other institutions may have their own equivalencies. The NIST system of assessment is based firmly upon established IB criteria.

NIST does not calculate a student’s GPA or rank them in a year group. However, for university application we are able to provide decile rankings to students according to their cumulative IB performance in addition to predicted IB Grades.
