School Profile
CEEB: 695270 UCAS: 48297
The New International School of Thailand, NIST, is one of the few fully accredited IB World Schools
in Bangkok, offering all three International Baccalaureate programmes. Located in the heart of Bangkok,
NIST is a co-educational day school providing an international education to a diverse group of students
from over 50 nationalities ranging from 3 to 18 years of age. Since its inception in 1992 with guidance
and support from the United Nations, NIST has gained a reputation as one of the leading IB schools
in the Asia Pacific Region. Its students consistently earn high scores in the IB Diploma and move
on to higher education in North America, Europe, and Australasia. Accredited by both CIS and NEASC,
NIST was the first school in Thailand to achieve dual accreditation.

Mission Statement:
As a leading IB world school, NIST’s mission is
to inspire and empower each student
to pursue individual excellence
and to enrich the world.
Student Body:
The school serves families from over 50 different countries. Most students enter higher education
in North America, the UK, Asia, Australasia, and Europe. NIST has a total enrolment of 1,503 students
from Early Years to Year 13.
Teachers:
NIST teachers also come from a varied group of nationalities with over 25 countries represented in
our teaching and support staff. NIST teachers are all fully qualified in teaching the IB curriculum
and meet both the Ministry of Education requirements and NIST’s own high standards.
School Calendar:
The school year begins in mid-August and ends in mid-June. It is divided into two semesters.
There are a minimum of 180 teaching days per year.
Curriculum:
As an IB World School, NIST follows the Primary Years Programme (PYP), the Middle Years Programme
(MYP), and the IB Diploma Programme (DP). Incorporated into the curricula is an extensive World
Languages programme (presently 21 different languages) and an extensive co¬curricular programme of
creative arts, sporting, and community service activities. Life-skills, Thai Studies and Global
Issues courses are also taught throughout. Physical Education is taught throughout the school.
This Year's Graduating Class
There are 87 students in the current senior class; successful candidates will graduate on 26 May,
2012. Of those, 85 are enrolled in the full IB Diploma program while 2 are enrolled in the Certificate.
Typically, 90 per cent of NIST graduates will matriculate abroad while 5 per cent will study in Thailand.
A few of our current seniors will embark on a Gap Year in September 2012.
Academic Requirements
The IB Diploma Programe is the basis of study for the final two years. Both IB Certificate and IB Diploma
students must take six subjects, one from each of the following groups:

| Group 1: |
Language A (Mother Tongue Language) |
| Group 2: |
Language B (Second Language) |
| Group 3: |
Individuals and Societies (History, Geography, Economics, Business & Management, Psychology)
|
| Group 4: |
Experimental Sciences (Physics, Chemistry, Biology, Environmental Systems, Design Technology)
|
| Group 4: |
Experimental Sciences (Physics, Chemistry, Biology, Environmental Systems, Design Technology)
|
| Group 5: |
Mathematics (Higher Level Mathematics, Further Mathematics, Standard Level Mathematics and Mathematical Studies)
|
| Group 6: |

|
In addition, IB Diploma students take Theory of Knowledge (TOK) and write an Extended Essay.
All students are involved in the Creativity, Action and Service (CAS) Programme.
The NIST Graduation Diploma is awarded to students who have successfully completed their
four years of Upper Secondary School. We honor credits earned at NIST and prior schools attended.
Criteria for graduation are academic and extra-curricular, in keeping with NIST’s philosophy of
holistic development. The NIST Graduation Diploma is valid as a High School Diploma in the USA
and abroad, in accordance with CIS and NEASC accreditation.
Grading
NIST does not calculate students’ GPAs or rank them in year groups.

Note:
Equivalency with the US Grade system follows recommendations made by the IB, based on
suggestions from the Franco-American Commission in Paris, and the collective wisdom of colleagues
and schools with experience of the systems. It is acknowledged that grading standards vary, and
that admissions officers in other institutions may have their own equivalencies. The NIST system
of assessment is based firmly upon established IB criteria.
