In November 2024, I had the chance to revisit my alma mater, NIST.
As the very first student ever enrolled at NIST, I had the unique honour of witnessing the school's grand opening in 1992. That's right – I am student #00001! Now, 32 years later, I find it hard to believe just how much the school has transformed!
I had the opportunity to reconnect with some familiar faces; staff members who have been there since almost the beginning, and we reminisced about the early days. During my time at NIST, my aunt worked in the Accounting department, which meant it was not unusual for me to be on campus until the evening hours each day. I fondly recall giving student-led tours of the campus for new and prospective students, spending summers working in the uniform shop and staying after school to reshelve books in the library. I hold dear the memories of all the teachers and staff who greatly influenced my upbringing. The school fostered a strong sense of community and felt like a second family to me.
On this visit from the USA, I was joined by my husband Tyler, and our children, Laurie (12) and Levi (9). I was thrilled to visit my school with them. We had the chance to experience the facility and see all the exciting new improvements that have been made.
We toured the school, and I was amazed by the incredible facilities now available. The campus has expanded in ways I never thought possible. The former open-air canteen has been transformed into a modern, air-conditioned cafeteria that features a cashless payment system, complete with a coffee bar & smoothie station! I remembered the open-air pavilion-style gymnasiums we used for PE and during recess. Those have been replaced by an impressive sports complex with three air-conditioned courts and a swimming pool. We explored the sports complex, gymnastics area, and the new field. The red dirt track I once knew was no longer there. As we entered the sports complex, I noticed plaques adorning the walls, displaying the names of some remarkable athletes, including some from my time there. A wave of nostalgia washed over me, bringing back memories, including the SEASAC tournaments where NIST consistently excelled year after year!
We wandered from one building to another, glancing into classrooms where students were engaged in Language Arts, Science, Math, and English. I couldn't help but think how incredible it would be to be a student there today! The curriculum has grown to include a wider array of foreign languages than ever. With advancements in today’s technology; students are now learning Computer Science and CAD. Additionally, both the Music and Art departments have seen significant expansion, now featuring private music practice rooms, a pottery studio, and an extensive range of materials and resources. As we walked through the halls, we admired the stunning artwork crafted by the students. It was heartwarming to see that the tradition of creativity and self-expression continues to thrive. I recall enrolling in every club and activity available to me: student council, yearbook, debate, sports, school plays, fashion shows, and art exhibitions. I remember the wonderful field trips we went on and the friendships and memories created.
As the classes let out, students filled the halls, and I could hear them chatting and laughing as they made their way to their next class. I have such fond memories of all the beautiful friendships that I had at NIST (many of whom I am still in contact with today).
As I stood there, I felt an overwhelming sense of gratitude for the experiences and opportunities that NIST provided me, shaping the person I am today.
My time at NIST was undoubtedly among the best years of my life, and I am eternally grateful for the chance to have gone there and for the amazing individuals I encountered throughout my journey.
Once a NISTie, always a NISTie!
