What Is Life Like in Bangkok?
Diverse, vibrant and dynamic, Bangkok ranks among the recognizable cities in the world and maintains a place among the most-visited holiday destinations year after year. Over 14 million people live in the greater Bangkok area, making it the undisputed cultural and economic center of Thailand, as well as one of the most important cities in Southeast Asia. As you begin to adjust to life here, you will begin to realize that the city provides something for everyone. Whether you enjoy browsing through massive shopping malls, tasting local and international cuisines, dancing in trendy clubs, or exploring historical sites, Bangkok can be an exciting and rewarding home.
As a teacher at NIST, you will have a wide range of choices available to you: living in the immediate vicinity of the school in bustling Asok or in a quieter area nearby, purchasing a modern condo or renting a small house, and enjoying the lively nightlife or joining Thailand’s burdgeoning movement of simple living. Several of our current faculty offered to provide a glimpse into their lives in Bangkok and at NIST to give a sense of the diversity of experiences.

“I have always loved the diversity that Thailand and Bangkok have to offer. From the islands to the mountains, to the various regional foods along with the range of internationals cuisines on offer, I can always find what I like. The community has a great variety of ways to stay active as well. I love the fact I can find a pick up basketball game, ride my bike at a park, hit up a CrossFit class, play in a men’s international softball league, play 18 holes or hit some balls at the range, all a few minutes from my house.
NIST also offers just as many opportunities to grow and improve as a teacher. Since joining the school, I’ve had the chance to build up creative service initiatives, including guiding students in creating a non-profit coffee company that supports farmers in northern Thailand. NIST is really supportive in helping you develop your ideas to provide new and creative opportunities for the kids. It’s a great feeling to watch those ideas turn into a reality.”

“When we applied to NIST we were very excited about the opportunity of working here. As teachers, we knew NIST’s reputation, and as a family, we knew that NIST would be a great school for our son. Although we are originally from Spain, we have previously lived for many years in Germany and then in South Korea. We really wanted our son to keep his international identity and the languages he speaks, and we had heard of NIST’s diversity and World Languages Programme.
NIST welcomed us with open arms. Teachers get all the support they need to get settled in Bangkok and Thailand. From day one we have realized that NIST was the place we expected. We feel very proud of working here as Spanish teachers. It is just beautiful to work every day with colleagues and students from around the world. We are part of a great World Languages Department in which each of us brings different perspectives and cultures to our collaborative meetings. The environment of the school just motivates you every day to become a better teacher. We can say without a doubt that we are now proud of belonging to the NIST community and family.”

“In one year at NIST, I’ve learned more about myself as an educator than I did throughout all of university and six years in the profession. NIST is constantly looking for ways to improve, build upon and refine its practice. It views teaching as a journey of growth, change and reflection, and it sets classrooms up to reflect this. Students, even at the elementary level, are well versed in the dialogue of lifelong learning. They crave new knowledge and engage in thoughtful conversations about how it can be applied in their lives. These learners are not motivated by grades or other external sources. Instead, they are propelled to dig deeper into ideas and concepts because they truly embody what it means to be curious.
The staff, community and international perspective all contribute to this successful model of learning, but it’s the students who live it each day and inspire me to do the same. I can only hope to model the same thirst for learning that these young minds have so I can soak up all the professional and personal opportunities both NIST and Thailand provide.”
Travel & Holidays in Bangkok
Like other mission-driven international schools in Bangkok and abroad, we maintain high expectations and reward commitment, but we also firmly believe that your time off belongs entirely to you. Over weekends and longer holidays, you will have the opportunity to explore the city, other regions of Thailand and Southeast Asia. Visiting every part of Bangkok could take a lifetime, and you can pick and choose the sights and activities that interest you.
In addition to the many attractions describe on our own activities page, many of which are recommended by current and former NIST teachers, Tripadvisor maintains a comprehensive directory of things to do in Bangkok.
