Overview

A behaviour coach is a qualified practitioner who collaborates with classroom teachers, learning support (LS) specialists, and counsellors to better manage and help meet the specific needs of a student with a significant learning difference. These needs may be academic, social, emotional and /or behavioural. The behaviour coach at NIST works with students to help them become increasingly functional and autonomous in their learning and interactions with others.

Students the behaviour coach may work with include students who demonstrate:

  • Bฺehavioural issues that present significant barriers to learning
  • Needs that demand more support than able to be provided by LS and CT teaching teams
  • Little to no progress after a number of other interventions have been implemented (on a case by case basis)
  • Issues that have led to a recommendation by external agent(s)

Key Responsibilities

  • Share teaching, learning and coaching roles and responsibilities with teachers, LS specialists and counsellors to co-support students with significant behavioural needs
  • Identify and act upon antecedents to prevent/diffuse potential behavioural difficulties
  • Collaborate and meet with teachers and LS specialists to develop and implement differentiated learning plans/behaviour plans
  • Work with students one on one, in small groups, and with other students while supported students work independently or with classroom teachers
  • Support students in following plans and reaching goals, and contribute to regular evaluation of the plan
  • Provide support in relevant classes, including specialist classes, throughout the day, modifying student tasks as required
  • Provide regular feedback to the support manager, classroom teachers and LS specialists on student progress and needs
  • Contribute to shared documentation, including support for teachers with reporting and ongoing feedback
  • Collect data and ensure that communication with outside therapists is continuously maintained
  • Maintain regular communication and collaboration between the teaching team and parents through the support manager (e.g., home contact book, emails, etc.)
  • Participate in student-parent-teacher conferences when required
  • Attend staff meetings and in-service days, advisory meetings and other meetings as required
  • Attend Action Week trips and/or field trips if required
  • Provide specific forms of support for students in:
    • Staying safe and maintaining the safety of others
    • Staying focused and following instructions
    • Being prepared with equipment for learning
    • Managing laptops and using them appropriately
    • Participating appropriately in individual, small group and whole class instructional times
    • Communicating with teachers, LS specialists and counsellors when help is needed
    • Functioning in an environment where there are multiple distractions
    • Improving communication by maintaining eye contact
    • Communicating personal interests with peers and teacher
    • Showing interest in peers
    • Responding appropriately to peers in social situations
    • Being positive in his/her approach to learning
    • Self advocating
    • Improving self-esteem and self-belief as a learner
    • Accepting responsibility for personal learning and behaviour
    • Developing coping and problem solving strategies
    • Reflecting on behaviours
