Early Years to Year 6: The Programme of Inquiry (PoI)
At NIST, the Primary Years Programme is organised through a Programme of Inquiry (PoI) that guides students’ learning across subject areas. The PoI provides a structured framework through which students develop knowledge, skills, understanding, and attributes while exploring meaningful concepts and real-world ideas.
Learning is organised into Units of Inquiry, which are connected through six transdisciplinary themes that help students explore important aspects of human experience.

An inquiry into identity, wellbeing, relationships, and belonging. Exploring what it means to learn, grow, and be human.
2. Where we are in place and time
An inquiry into histories, journeys, communities, and change. Exploring connections between people, places, and time.
3. How we express ourselves
An inquiry into creativity, communication, and perspective. Exploring how ideas, beliefs, and experiences are expressed.
4. How the world works
An inquiry into patterns, systems, and scientific understanding. Exploring discovery, innovation, and their impact on the world.
5. How we organise ourselves
An inquiry into systems, structures, and decision making. Exploring how communities function, collaborate, and create change.
6. Sharing the planet
An inquiry into coexistence, responsibility, and sustainability. Exploring relationships between people, communities, and the natural world.

Academic Rigour in the Primary Years

Language
Students develop confidence as readers, writers, speakers, and listeners. By developing foundational knowledge and skills, they learn through, with and about language. Through engaging with and producing purposeful texts, students learn to express themselves and communicate effectively for different purposes and audiences.
Social Studies
Students explore how people, places, and societies shape the world around us. Through investigating human experiences, cultures, and systems, they develop an understanding of different perspectives and the connections between people, communities, and environments.
Mathematics
Students develop mathematical understanding through reasoning, problem solving, and application. Learning focuses on making sense of mathematical ideas, recognising patterns and relationships, and using mathematics confidently to interpret and navigate the world.
Art
Students explore and communicate ideas through creative expression. Through creating and responding to the arts, they develop imagination, technical and performance skills, aesthetic appreciation, and an understanding of how the arts reflect cultures, experiences, and perspectives.
Science
Students investigate the natural and physical world through observation, experimentation, and inquiry. They develop curiosity and critical thinking while building an understanding of scientific concepts and the ways scientific knowledge helps explain and shape our world.
Personal, Social & PE (PSPE)
Students develop the knowledge, skills, and dispositions that support wellbeing, healthy relationships, and active lifestyles. Through physical activity and personal and social learning, they build self-management, resilience, and a sense of responsibility for themselves and others.
Beyond the Classroom: Expeditions and Service

Expeditions
Experiences begin with day trips in the early elementary years and develop into overnight and multi-night expeditions as students grow older. These carefully designed experiences build independence, collaboration, outdoor skills, and a deeper connection with the natural world.
Service & Action
We encourage students to move beyond awareness to action. Whether through school-based initiatives or the annual Community Partnership Week, students learn that they have the power and responsibility to make a positive difference in their local and global communities.

We implement Responsive Classroom, including daily Morning Meetings, to create a safe, inclusive, and joyful learning environment. Our dedicated counselling team and learning support specialists ensure that every child is known, valued, and supported.
