Middle Years Programme (MYP)
NIST International School offers the globally recognised International Baccalaureate Middle Years Programme (MYP) for students aged 11–16 (Years 7–11).
NIST delivers an inquiry-driven education that supports the development of critical and reflective thinkers, confident communicators, and internationally minded learners who engage thoughtfully with the world.
NIST connects classroom learning with real-world contexts, supporting students’ academic, social, and emotional development during this important stage of learning.
A Framework for Conceptual and Connected Learning
The IB Middle Years Programme is designed to foster inquiry, conceptual understanding, and meaningful connections between learning and the world around the students.
Students study across eight subject groups:

MYP Programme Overview
The NIST MYP Journey: Year 7 to Year 11
The Middle Years Programme (MYP) at NIST is a structured five-year journey that supports students’ academic, social, and personal development as they progress from Middle School into High School.

Years 7 & 8 - Building Strong Foundations
Students build strong foundations in organisation, communication, and self-management while exploring a broad range of subjects in a supportive learning environment. Advisory programmes support students as they develop confidence, independence, and a sense of belonging within the secondary school.

Year 9 - Growth and Community Connection
Year 9 marks a period of growth and connection, with an increased focus on community engagement and real-world learning. Students participate in service initiatives, interdisciplinary learning, and projects, such as social entrepreneurship, developing greater awareness of their role within local and global communities.

Year 10 - Entering High School with Purpose
Year 10 marks the start of students' high school experience. Academic expectations increase as students develop resilience, balance wellbeing, and deepen their learning through interdisciplinary units, service opportunities, and experiential education, including Action Week in Chiang Mai.

Year 11 - Culminating the MYP Experience
Year 11 represents the culmination of the MYP experience. Students complete the Personal Project, continue to develop Approaches to Learning skills, and prepare for course selection into the IB Diploma Programme as they shape their individual pathways and future educational aspirations.
Beyond the Classroom: Expeditions & Service-Learning
We believe that some of the most meaningful learning happens beyond the classroom. By integrating experiential learning directly into the curriculum, students are supported to make connections between their learning and the world around them.

Experiential Education
NIST X provides a structured experiential education pathway through local explorations and regional expeditions across Southeast Asia. Through sequenced and intentional learning experiences, students develop independence, resilience, cultural understanding, and a strong sense of community through authentic learning beyond the classroom.
Through these experiences, students are challenged to step beyond familiar environments and apply their learning in meaningful contexts. NIST X encourages reflection, collaboration, and responsible decision-making while fostering leadership, adaptability, and a deeper understanding of the interconnected world around them.

Service-Learning
Service Learning is an integral part of learning at NIST and a required component for students throughout the Middle Years Programme. Through Service Learning, students make meaningful connections between their learning and real community needs, thereby developing empathy, responsibility, and ethical awareness.
As students progress through the MYP, Service Learning experiences become increasingly student-initiated and reflective. Students are encouraged to move beyond simply focusing on helping others themselves to planning and implementing wider engagement with communities through shared commitment, collaboration, and purposeful action, supporting the development of internationally minded and socially responsible learners.
The Personal Project: Celebrating Individual Passions
The Personal Project is the culminating experience of the Middle Years Programme (MYP), empowering students to take ownership of their learning through an in-depth exploration of a personal passion or interest.
By setting goals, conducting research, creating a product or outcome, and reflecting on their progress, students develop the confidence, independence, and skills needed for future learning.
The project celebrates student agency while showcasing the creativity, critical thinking, and self-management developed throughout the MYP.

Independent Inquiry and Student Choice
In Year 11, students complete an independent inquiry project based on a topic of personal interest. Through the Personal Project, students explore their passions while developing creativity, problem-solving skills, and perseverance. Projects can take many forms, including creative, practical, and research-based outcomes, reflecting each student’s interests and strengths.

Developing Approaches to Learning (ATL)
The Personal Project brings together the Approaches to Learning developed throughout the MYP, including research, communication, critical thinking, and self-management skills. Through this process, students reflect on their learning, prepare for the academic expectations of the IB Diploma Programme, and strengthen their confidence as independent learners.
Holistic Support & Wellbeing
At NIST, learning and wellbeing are closely connected. We are committed to inclusive education that supports students’ academic, social, and emotional development through a comprehensive support network.

Multi-Tiered System of Support (MTSS)
NIST provides a multi-tiered system of support to meet a range of learning and wellbeing needs. This includes access to counselling, learning support, and English Language Acquisition (ELA) specialists, ensuring students receive appropriate support to flourish.

Advisory, Wellbeing and Pastoral Support
Advisory programmes foster strong relationships and provide students with consistent adult guidance. Through Advisory, students are supported in developing organisation, self-management, and a sense of belonging throughout their secondary years.
Assessment that Empowers Growth
The Middle Years Programme (MYP) uses criterion-related assessment rather than ranking students against their peers. This approach supports reflection, goal setting, and continuous improvement through clear feedback and reporting.
