University Counselling

University Counselling

NIST provides comprehensive and individualized support to students as they navigate unravelling themselves, the college search and ultimately the application process.

Our university counsellors strive to empower students to make informed decisions about their post-secondary education by offering guidance on self-exploration, academic planning, career exploration, standardized testing, college research, and financial aid. The office is committed to fostering a culture of inclusivity, equity, and access, and works to ensure all students have equal opportunities to achieve their college aspirations. NIST believes that the college search and application process is a valuable opportunity for students to reflect on their personal goals, interests, and values, and our ultimate goal is to help each student find a college that is the best fit for their unique needs, desires and aspirations.

Meet our university counsellors Team

What does the university counseling team offer?

The university counselling team runs a prescriptive career and higher education curriculum through years 10 to 13. Students will learn to explore their own strengths and personality traits, explore the world of work and a vast array of careers that exist beyond high school, before starting to research and explore the limitless post-secondary possibilities available to them. Once students have the knowledge and skills necessary to be successful in embarking toward their future, students will start to hone in on their prospective university major and institutions before applying in year 13.

1-to-1 Sessions

Every child is unique, which is why we value our 1-to-1 sessions where students can meet directly with their university counsellor to discuss their own personal journey. With an open-door policy, students have access to their university counsellor throughout their high school years, to discuss career ideas, consider IB subject choices, discuss university majors, explore the wide range of opportunities available to them after they graduate from NIST and work on their university applications.

Year Group Advisory Sessions

The university counsellors work with students from years 10 to 13, moving through a sequence of exploring ‘Who They Are’, ‘What They’ll Do In The Future’, ‘Where They’ll Go’ and finally ‘How They’ll Get There’. These sessions bring students together to explore bigger ideas such as personality traits and helping them to navigate the vast world of careers before ultimately exploring the realm of higher education and the different opportunities available to them post-NIST. Throughout the year, the university counsellors run workshops on an array of topics from exploring the different countries and regions of the world, to financial aid, helping students to ‘find their voice’ in admissions essays, understanding how to fill out different university application systems and more.

University Visits

Each year beyond the 200+ institution university fair NIST hosts, the school also welcomes individual visits from institutions around the world allowing students to get face-to-face time with representatives of prospective universities. Many of these guests will also hold workshops or engaging sample lectures which help students to better understand the options they have access to post-NIST. NIST was fortunate enough to host a ‘Night With The Ivies’ event this year, welcoming Brown, Princeton and U Penn onto campus for an evening event which the wider Bangkok community was also able to attend.

Community Events

Each academic year, the university counsellors host family sessions inviting students and parents to learn more about the year ahead and information pertaining to their year level. Further events are also held for families to come together to discuss IB subject choices in year 11, the vast array of post-NIST opportunities in year 12 and the university application process in year 13. More specific events are also held such as visa information sessions run by embassy staff to inform students and parents about how to obtain their student visas. In order to engage with our parent community, the counsellors run frequent coffee mornings exploring everything from updates and trends in university admissions around the world, to breaking down selective admissions. Each year, the counsellors focus the content of these sessions around topics that pertinent and relevant to the communities needs and will also ask the community what topics they would like to hear about.

In order to stay connected with universities and colleagues across the globe, our university counsellors are members of CIS, NACAC and IACAC. Our counsellors attend and present at both counsellor and university admissions-focused conferences on a yearly basis. The counsellors share much of their findings through numerous events and workshops for both students and parents to ensure our community stays up to date with the latest developments and trends in university admissions. To date, our counselling team has visited and experienced over 400 institutions a number which is ever-growing each year.
