Class of 2017 Sets New Record in IB Exams

Each summer graduates around the world eagerly anticipate the announcement of the IB Diploma Programme exam scores, the final mark they receive before moving on to university studies. While NIST relies on the exam as a standard measure of its ability to prepare students for this next stage, it represents only one small piece of what makes a NIST education unique.

Yet it was difficult to not be thrilled when the Class of 2017 built on a tradition of academic excellence by setting a new school record of 36.3, with 99% of the class earning the IB diploma. With the world average again hovering near 30, this places NIST among the best IB schools in the world with a large graduating cohort of over 100 students.

Equally impressive were the two perfect scores of 45 earned by Saira Madarasmi and Sila Puhl, the school’s sixth and seventh in the last five years, and a mark reached by only 218 students this year. In total, 41.4% of the Class of 2017 received 38 or more points compared to 16.7% worldwide, and 16.2% received 42 or more points compared to 4.1% worldwide. Representing their diverse background, a full 48.6% of the class received a bilingual diploma, again well above the average one in four students who do so around the globe.

Beyond the stellar exam scores, the Class of 2017 encapsulated the school’s values in their time at NIST. Its members worked with Chulalongkorn University faculty to create an early childhood centre for children in need, expanded a non-profit coffee company that provides a sustainable income for farmers in Omgoi, and tackled numerous other individual projects driven by their passion for making a difference in the lives of others.

As they begin their studies at Columbia, Cornell, Johns Hopkins, Oxford, University College London and other universities around the world, NIST’s newest graduates will be well equipped to continue excelling and positively impacting their communities.

PYP Exhibition Highlights Student Creativity

In many schools around the world, you would expect to see year 6 students in a classroom, sitting in their desks as they passively listen to a lesson by their teacher. This is not the case at NIST. On Tuesday, 26 April, it was the students who were presenting and engaging with gathered teachers, parents and peers at the annual Primary Years Programme (PYP) Exhibition.

The culmination of the PYP programme, this exhibition allows students to choose projects they feel passionate about and present them to the community. By focusing on the story, inspiration and creative process behind their work, the students communicate the full story behind the projects and not just the end product. This promotes involved discussion between the artist and observer, creating a deeper understanding and connection that both can use to learn from and grow.

But how can we expect this from 10-year-old students? This level of responsibility and freedom of choice is often considered too much for children at that age to handle, particularly in traditional schools. But by demonstrating their understanding of the task at hand, as well as their critical and creative thinking skills, the students proved the validity of the International Baccalaureate (IB) philosophy, which emphasizes experiential learning and inquiry.

At the opening ceremony, two older students in the Diploma Programme also presented their advanced projects: a musical composition and art pieces. Both, easily the match of professional work, embodied the inspiration and creativity of the artists. Describing the process they went through, the students provided a glimpse into the high level of expectation and complexity demanded by the higher levels of the IB.

The parallels between the young students and their older peers offers a glimpse at what is possible at the height of the IB programme, showing what the PYP students can strive for and aim to achieve. The exhibition offers students and parents the chance to see the vision and goals of the IB programme in action, and recognize how it consistently challenges students to develop skills, confidence and resilience. If education aims to meet the challenges of the new century, it is this kind of learning that must continue to grow in our schools and communities.

NIST’s Class of 2014 Sets New Record in IB Diploma Scores

NIST-International-School-Class-of-2014When NIST first opened in 1992, it had already set its sights on the IB programme. One of the few truly international curricula in the world and highly rigorous, the IB perfectly suited the ideals of the young community. Since that time NIST students have gained a reputation for excellence in the IB exams, consistently posting scores well above the global average. The 87 members of the Class of 2014 were no exception, yet their remarkable results also mark the beginning of an expanded vision for NIST—one that will look beyond just a number to measure the accomplishments of students.

All IB diploma students complete their final year of study by taking the externally evaluated IB exams. Like most other forms of standardized assessment, world averages remain relatively constant, hovering just under 30 out of a possible 45 points annually (with 24 being the passing mark). NIST students have surpassed that standard every year, earning an average of 33 to 35, and the 80 members of the newly graduated Class of 2014 who chose to pursue the diploma set a record with an average score of 36! As far as it can be determined, no other school in Thailand has achieved such a high average score while enrolling nearly all students in their graduating class in the programme.

Even more impressive was the fact that 41% of the NIST students received 38 or more points, and 28% received 40 or more—compared to the respective 9% and 5% worldwide who earned those same scores. Additionally, out of only 146 students around the globe who earned perfect scores of 45, two were from NIST: Amillee Srethbhakdi and Priyanka Sukumaran. Highlighting the well-rounded nature of their abilities, nearly half the graduating class earned bilingual diplomas.

Despite the impressive accomplishments of the students in the exams, however, NIST is now striving to ignite further growth in its educational programmes, focusing on other ways to offer students unique learning opportunities that will enable them to distinguish themselves on the global stage. As universities and employers have increasingly acknowledged, a number cannot convey passion, sociability or persistence, nor can it tell them what differentiates one applicant from another.

In line with this goal, members of the incoming Class of 2015 will be the first to earn the Global Citizen Diploma (GCD). A joint venture by NIST, Yokohama International School in Japan and Zurich International School in Switzerland, the GCD is an optional qualification that parallels the IB diploma and enables students to maintain a record of their accomplishments in a range of areas. From social activism and entrepreneurism to musical composition and graphic design, each endeavor is reflected upon by students and assessed by teachers, weaving personal narratives.

Upon applying to universities, NIST students will be able to provide portfolios that tell their unique stories far beyond what a number can convey, highlighting their strengths and demonstrating personal growth. A student who earned an average 30 on the IB exam could reveal exceptional leadership abilities by reflecting on the creation of a community service group. Another with an average record in language classes could turn it into a strength by writing about time spent volunteering as a translator. In short, they will stand out from other applicants.

While NIST’s focus on academic excellence will continue, the GCD will play an integral role in the community’s emerging vision and is set to position the school as a leader in the evolution of education in the 21st century. More than ever, education must look beyond exams to nurture global citizens who are reflective, principled and balanced. NIST’s students will continue to excel in the IB exams, but they—and the school—will be able to share even more about their accomplishments in the future.
